Tom Helms is currently serving as the Director of Emergency Management and Safety Services at Lansing Community College. He has worked in the Emergency Management & Safety Services Department at LCC in various capacities since January 2008. His career at Lansing Community College spans more than 20 years. Tom currently serves as a board member for Do1Thing (non-profit organization dedicated to preparing citizens and families for disasters) as well as special committee member for Do1Thing Kids. Tom is a certified police officer with MCOLES (Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards) for over 20 years and holds many certificates in specialized training.
Tom holds certifications and various training from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), Michigan State Police, American Red Cross, OSHA (MIOSHA), Michigan State University, TEEX (Texas Engineering Extension Service), New Mexico Tech, Michigan Center for Truck Safety, and various other professional organizations. His knowledge and experience spans a wide range of concentrations relating to safety, emergency management and law enforcement. Tom is a member in good standing with MEMA (Michigan Emergency Management Association). He also possesses a CDL (commercial driver’s license) Class A, with air brake, passenger, tanker, and double/triples endorsements.
Tom holds an Associate degree from Lansing Community College in General Education and graduated from the Mid Michigan Police Academy in 1995. Tom also holds a Bachelor degree in Applied Science with concentration in Public Safety from Siena Heights University. Tom is currently pursuing a Master’s in Organizational Leadership from Siena Heights University and is enrolled in the Michigan program to obtain certification as a Professional Emergency Manager.
